Free Music from Debra Arlyn

Free music today from Debra Arlyn, a singer and songwriter from the Pacific Northwest.  She sings pop/soul music and generated a fair amount of buzz for both her voice (which sounds great, by the way) and songwriting.

Heath McNease & A Thrift Store Jesus

It’s dark, raw, and real.  And really, really good.

Heath McNease recently released his new album Thrift Store Jesus as a pay-what-you’d-like download, and I think it may be the best Christian hip-hop album I’ve heard this year.  High praise, I know, but I think it deserves it.

The title track alludes to a poorly done painting of Jesus Heath purchased at a thrift store, and compares his music with the painting.  It’s extremely honest, and like most honest things, thought-provoking, something that carries through the rest of the album as well.  ”Groundhog Day” is a bit of an autobiography, while “Heart Still Beats” reworks the  Brave Saint Saturn song of the same name, pointing out how even those who are deepest in sin have a heartbeat, and therefore hope to change.  It’s deep, emotional, and very, very good, and to top it off, the beats are very solid and Heath’s lyrics and delivery is top notch.

Just a warning – the honesty that make this record great also make it pretty edgy.  If it were a film, I’d rate it PG-13, but worth watching.  Keep that in mind.
