Free Song from TobyMac & Kirk Franklin
…And no, it’s not “Lose My Soul”. However, the video for “Lose My Soul” did debut on Amazon.com a few days ago. You can watch it here. No, the free music I’m about to tell you about is from the CompassionArt: Creating Freedom From Poverty compilation, an CD featuring tons of different artists, with 100% of the proceeds going to help those living in poverty all of the world. Cool idea.
Now, track #12 from that CD, “Let It Glow”, is by TobyMac, featuring Kirk Franklin. You can download the song for free from the On Course website, from their music player. I had a bit of trouble finding it myself, but if you look at the bottom of the page you’ll see the link. “Let It Glow” isn’t my favorite song by TobyMac, but is it still a decent song. Plus, it’s free, so what exactly do you have to lose?
One last thing, some of you may remember On Course from a while back, when I posted about how they were giving away a free song every week in their monthly (or was it weekly?) newsletters. Sadly, it seems they’ve stopped doing that for whatever reason, and now the only free music is this one song. Maybe they’ll continue at some point, which would be great, though I doubt it. Anyway, in case you were wondering what happened to them, now you know.
Free Album Download from Violet

Today’s free music comes from the band Violet. Violet is actually a one-man-group, composed entirely of Brady Lundy. He has his entire album Thieves in the Forest up for download on his Purevolume page, where you can download all of the individual songs.
By the way, Brady has been know to frequent TFCMB, so if you needed another reason to check him out, you can do so to support a fellow TFCMB reader.
Free Sampler from You to You
Well, kind of. What I’m talking about is a free sampler CD featuring a trendy combination of independant & signed artists, almost all of them being currently under-the-radar. It’s available free as a promotion from Huntington University, the “Youniversity” (and thus the “You” in the title), a Christian college in Indiana.
I stumbled on this accidently while I was researching the band Attaboy after Gospel Music Channel featured one of their songs. To be honest, the major reason I signed up to get the CD was Hello Kelly. Once the CD arrived, however, I got a pleasent surprise. The first track, Attaboy’s “Ready to Run” was catchy, anthematic, and clearly featured on Christ. After the pop-rock track, Red Umbrella comes on with “Straitjacket”, a much rockier song, but still good. Immediately after that, The Contact comes on with a eerie and driving song called “Black Sea”. It kind of weirded me out the first time I heard it, but after that I really started to enjoy it. I think it’s one of the best songs on the whole CD.
I suppose I could just go on and review the whole thing song by song, and as much as I’d love to do that, it’s getting late, so I’m going to need to hurry this up a bit. Right after The Contact, a name that should be familiar, Inhabited, rocks out with a song from their latest CD Love. After that, there’s a dramatic genre switch to the hip-hop beats of Heath McNease. I had never heard of Heath before, and “Where I’m Not Wanted” left a good first impression. Then Hello Kelly came on. Now, the whole reason I signed up for the CD was because it has Hello Kelly and Attaboy, so I had high hopes for the song. Unfortunately, they were only partially fulfilled. The song itself is fine, sunny and fun, but it’s also a love song. Until that point, all of the songs had kept the focus on God, so “Simple Love Song” just felt out of place.
After that small hiccup, Betsy Walker and Alisa Turner offer their respective tracks, both of which turn out to be soft, acoustic piano songs. They are followed by another Attaboy songs, The Fabulous, One Life Lost, and Sevenglory, who wrapped the CD up. One the whole, I was impressed with the quality of the music and production. All around, it’s a worth-while album, particularly since it’s free. I’m going to get quite a few more listens out of, for sure.
Wow, I just realized how long I’ve been typing here. I guess I got carried away. Sorry! Anyway, to get a free copy of the CD in the mail, open the link below, and then click on the brown boy, furthest to the right. That should pull up the track listing. Once you get that done, located the button that says “Get Your Free CD”, and click it. Fill in your information, click submit, and in a couple of weeks you should get your music in the mail. Not as a cool as an instant download, but I guess you’ll just have to be patient.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I haven’t gotten any other mail from Huntington since I signed up. I know some colleges can be a bit “aggresive” when it comes to marketing, so I’m happy to announce that Huntington has yet to flood me with promotional material. That said, don’t worry about sharing your information.
Update: Ugh, it appears I spoke too soon. Since I wrote this up, recieved several letters and emails from Huntington, trying to convince me to attend there. It’s what I was expecting when I first signed up, but I wish they would have started mailing me before I wrote the above paragraph.
Free Song from The Fray
Free mp3 from The Fray today. TurboTax (the tax software) is sponsoring a free download of track #1, “Syndicate” from The Fray’s latest CD, creatively titled The Fray.
To download the song, you first need to friend TurboTax on MySpace, then watch a short ad. After that, you can download the song for free.
Free Music from Sara Groves & Freddy Rodriguez
iTicket’s has just added two new free songs for the week, “I Will Run” by Freddy Rodriguez, and “It Might Be Hope” by Sara Groves. I haven’t had a chance to listen yet, so I’ll keep this short. I will say, however that you might want to keep your eyes open. There may be some very exciting downloads coming in the near future…
Free Rare Remix from Blindside
Today’s featured free music comes from a band called Blindside, and exciting free music it is. Why? Because it’s a 100% legal, 100% official, rare remix. Any true fan should have a copy.
Anyway, the original song was “Silence”, which has been mutated by the reactive waters of remixing into a stripped down version of it’s former self. The new version fits the title nicely. It’s ambient, with plenty of quiet moments highlighting the vocals. The remix can’t really be called rock, but, at least in my opinion, the new version works. It’s not showy, or electronic, like most remixes. It is a soft, almost silent version that showcases Christian’s vocals and the lyrics (which don’t disappoint. Blindside has a nack for writing inspiring, deep lyrics).
Now, to download the song you’re going to be enlisted. Enlisted in the Blindside Union, the band’s street team, that is. Head over to the link below, fill out the form, and join. Once you’ve done that, you can go back to the street team site and click “Exclusives” list in the sidebar. “Silence (Remix)” is on the page.
One last thing, it is possible to access the “Exclusives” page without joining the street team, but don’t do that. It’s called exclusives for a reason, and since the band obviously intends it to be a thank you to their fans, it’s just not right to download the song without joining first. That said, I hope you enjoy the song.
And Then There Was A Free Song
Today your free song is from the new Tooth & Nail artist And Then There Were None. They are a dance rock group, sort of like Family Force 5 (but only sort of). The song is “Reinventing Robert Cohn,” and its off of their album Who Speaks For Planet Earth? which comes out February 24.
Along with the free download, there is an invitation to enter a contest to win their new CD and a band t-shirt. To enter the contest, you have to join the “And Then There Were None Dance Off Contest” group on YouTube and submit a video of you dancing to the song. At the point of me writing this, there are only 8 submissions, and 5 people win the prize, so if you have pretty good odds of winning. The contest ends in 10 days, so hurry.
Free Download from Christy Nockels
Free music today from Christy Nockels, formerly 1/2 of Watermark, and currently a solo artist on sixsteprecords. She has a free download of her song “Life Light Up” on her website. “Life Light Up” is the first single from her new record, due out June 2, 2009. I haven’t heard anything about the name of the CD, but my guess is it’ll be self-titled. I suppose I’ll have to wait and see to know for sure.
Like I said, she & her husband Nathan were the two members of Watermark, a rather popular CCM band, and dispite the fact that Watermark is no longer making music, it looks like the couple are still working at music, Nathan as a producer and Christy as a solo artist.
Anyway, check out the sneak peak of the new CD. The download is free, but you will need to sign up for Christy Nockel’s mailing list before you can download it. Enjoy!
Lovelite – All Color
Today’s featured download is, in fact, a full CD by Californian worship band Lovelite. The CD is called All Color, and I’m actually listening to it as I type. I’m impressed.
Andrew Polfer and his wife Jen, the group’s core members, alternate on the vocals, which produces gives the songs a great sound. Jen’s voice reminds me of Leigh Nash (of Sixpence None the Richer) and Brooke Fraser, and Andrew’s sounds a little like Phil Wickham, so if could imagine a combination of those three voices, and have them sing over music that sounds like Sleeping at Last or even some of Esterlyn’s slower songs, that’s about what Lovelite sounds like. (And don’t worry, if you can’t imagine what that would sound like, you can always just listen on their website.)
Like I said to start with, Lovelite is a worship band, and all of the songs on All Color reflect that. The lyrics are intelligent and heart-felt, and the music is great, and to top it off, the whole thing is professionally mixed & mastered. I’m really digging this one.
Now, for the download. The group has got the full CD up on their website as a pay-what-you-feel download, so you can get it for as much or as little as you’d like. It’s definitely worth the $12 or $11 you’d pay for a normal CD, but if that’s a bit much, you can always pay less. Or, if God’s blessed you with some extra money, you can gift it on and give a little more. I know the band would appreciate any size donation.
Anyway, check the band out. I know I’m going to keep this one handy for future listens, and hope you enjoy it as much as I am. Needless to say, I’d love to hear what you think. Enjoy!
-All Color on Lovelite’s Website-
One last thing, Lovelite has also got all the chords and lyrics for their songs available for free on their Resources page, so if you’d like to play one of their songs at your church, you can. All they ask is that you send them an email and let them know how it went. Pretty cool if you ask me.
