Hawk Nelson
Own A Piece of Hawk Nelson History!
Wow, first comes a rap about Charlie Hall’s beard, now Hawk Nelson is giving away a brand new, just-for-fun rap song called “Sea of Red”, which happens to be about the Calgary Flames. It even has the auto-tune effect.
There’s actually quite a story behind the song, according to the band’s “Hawk Nelson Studio Video Blog”, a very entertaining (but also definitely fictional) video diary that follows Hawk Nelson through the recording of their new CD, Live Life Loud. Evidently, it was originally going to be the first single from the album, until it was later replaced by “The Meaning of Life”. For your convenience, I’ve embedded Part 1 from the series below, to provide the backstory to the song. If you like the first one, you can also watch Part 2 and Part 3 on YouTube.
Anyway, “Sea of Red”. It’s available for free from BEC Recording’s website, on the music player. Just hit the “More” button on the music player, click on “Sea of Red” and then click “Download Mp3″. Your little piece of Hawk Nelson history will soon download. Enjoy!
Summer Festival Sampler 2009
Yes, you heard me right, yet another summer sampler from Tooth & Nail/BECrecordings/Solid State. This one might not be as big and make your head explode, but it still contains some good music. Also, many of these songs were already on the previous Sampler Matt posted just two days ago, but, this one does have a few songs that were not. Of the twelve songs, 7 of them are on the Fuel Sampler. Track listing:
- Emery – Cutthroat Collapse
- Thousand Foot Krutch – Bring Me To Life
- Kutless – The Rescue
- FM Static – Boy Moves to a New Town with Optimistic Outlook
- The Glorious Unseen – Hear Our Prayers
- Falling Up – Streams of Woe at Acheron
- KJ-52 – Wake Up
- Hawk Nelson – Lets Dance Dojo Dominating Remix by Jason Dunn
- Since October – Guilty
- August Burns Red – Thirty and Seven
- Seventh Day Slumber – Take Everything
- Children 18:3 – All My Balloons
Anyway, even if you did get the Fuel Sampler, the remaining five songs on the Summer Festival Sampler ‘09 make it all the worth while to download. Besides, what do you have to lose?
-Summer Festival Sampler 2009-
It also says that the ‘The Rescue’ is done by an artist called by the same name. However, when I downloaded it, it came out as Kutless. I haven’t heard of an artist by the name by ‘The Rescue’, so I believe it was just an error.
Fuel Returns (And Matt’s Head Explodes)
It’s true – Tooth & Nail and Solid State Records have let loose yet another unbelievably epic sampler to wreck musically chaos on the eardrums of fans everywhere. In fact, the only thing that could come close to touching this is the last Fuel sampler. The tracklist:
- Surrogate – “Exercise Machines”
- Living Sacrifice – “Overkill Exposure (Rough Mix)”
- Haste the Day – “68″
- As Cities Burn – “84′ Sheepdog”
- Children 18:3 – “All My Balloons”
- FM Static – “Boy Moves To A New Town With Optimistic Outlook”
- Thousand Foot Krutch – “Bring Me To Life”
- Emery – “Cutthroat Collapse”
- Ivoryline – “Days End”
- mewithoutYou – “Every Thought A Thought of You”
- The Crucified – “The Pit”
- MxPx – “Punk Rock Girl”
- The Ascendicate – “Scottish”
- Oh, Sleeper – “Son of the Morning”
- August Burns Red – “Thirty and Seven”
- Becoming The Archetype – “Dichotomy”
- Copeland – “The Grey Man”
- Hawk Nelson – “Let’s Dance (Dojo Dominating Remix)”
- Showbread – “Nothing Matters Anymore”
- MyChildren MyBride – “On The Wings of Integrity”
- Neon Horse – “Strange Town”
- Corey Crowder – “Look How Far We’ve Come”
- Trenches – “Sacrament”
- The Showdown – “[Achilles] The Backbreaker”
- And Then There Were None – “Reinventing Robert Cohn”
- Family Force 5 – “Fever”
- Jonezetta – “Sick In The Teeth”
- Since October – “Guilty”
- The Chariot – “Daggers”
- Underoath – “Desperate Times, Desperate Measures”
- Secret & Whisper – “Anchors (Acoustic)”
If that doesn’t get you pumped up for this, I don’t know what will. Well, besides the fact that the Showbread and Oh, Sleeper songs are brand new, never-before-heard. They aren’t even on MySpace yet. Extremely epic, and a must-have.
Of course, that’s not to say that it’s perfect. The cover art is a little creepy, and the website mentions a song from The Almost, which wasn’t in my .zip file. I won’t be surprised if there’s an update with the song in it soon enough. Even so, those are minor details. Get this, right, now. Seriously. Do it. Now:
-Tooth & Nail/Solid States’s Fuel Sampler-
Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I’m totally digging the Children 18:3, FM Static, and Ivoryline right now, great stuff, and I’m not nearly through the sampler yet. What are your favorite songs?
Free EP From Hawk Nelson’s Guitarist
Some amazing free music today from Jonathan Steingard, the lead guitarist of Hawk Nelson. He’s just posted a brand new free EP called Atlantis on his personal blog.
It’s got three songs from the up coming CD Under The Canopy. “The Seige of Atlantis”, the first track, is a modern punk-rock tune, followed by two slower songs, “You Always You” and “Heart Set”.
I’m quite impressed with all three songs. Not only are they all free, they are also high-quality, well-written, well-produced tracks.
If you’re a fan of Relient K, Philmont, Stellar Kart, or (obviously) Hawk Nelson, definitely give Jonathan’s new solo project a listen. You’ll be glad you did. After all, it’s free.

Cry of the Afflicted, Hawk Nelson, Leeland, Grand Prize, and Bionicles!
Newer Christian hardcore band Cry of the Afflicted has their song “Take This Day” available for downloading on the Cry of the Afflicted Purevolume profile:

WorshipTogether.com is offering a free download of Leeland’s new song “Enter This Temple” to promote Leeland’s new CD, Opposite Way. The song is only going to be available for a limited time, so be sure to hurry over and pick it up.
Hawk Nelson debuted the music video for latest single “Friend Like That” on Amazon.com last week. I’ve seen it, and I have to say, it’s pretty cool. In my opinion, it’s the Hawk’s best video. But I’ll let you decide that for yourself.
Before Esterlyn was Esterlyn, they were Grand Prize. They released one CD Identity before breaking up and eventually reforming as Esterlyn. You can download three songs from them (Grand Prize, not Esterlyn) at their MySpace profile. The songs are excellent. You do need to be logged in on MySpace to download the songs, however.
Hawk Nelson Typo and Free Music from Charlie Hall
I think this is a typo:
[Name removed to protect privacy], this is a confirmation that you have entered the Hawk Nelson “Hawk Nelson Is Your Friend” Contest. If you are a winner, we will inform you via email after the contest closes on January 25th, 2010. Thanks.
LOL, that’s a long contest… (Thanks for sending this in!)
Aside from that, I do have some music for you. It’s from Charlie Hall, from the latest Passion record, and is called “Walk of the World”, and let me tell you, it’s popped up everywhere. To coin a phrase, it’s “Fringle”
–”Fringle“: A free song sent to several different sites, much like a single is sent to radio stations. A combination of the words “free” and “single”.
Like I said, you can download the song in many places. Jesusfreakhideout.com is just one of several, but it’s my favorite, so here you go:
11 Bands to Watch for in 2008
11. Stellar Kart. If we really can Expect the Impossible, it must be pretty cool.
10. Inhabited. Their new album Love has been getting good reviews already, and looks to be an great CD.
9. Inhale Exhale. After a great debut, their sophomore disk looks to be great as well.
8. Pillar. With the apparent return to their older style, For the Love of the Game looks to be a worth squeal continuation to the Pillar legacy.
7. Hawk Nelson. If past awesome-ness is a sign of future awesome-ness, they are in great shape.
6. The Afters. After, what, three years, the band return with their second album, which looks to be as good or better then then I Wish We All Could Win.
5. P.O.D. (Payable on Death). Overlooking there new CD, When Angels and Serpents Dance, would be a serious mistake.
4. Showbread. Is a so crazy. They are releasing two different CDs on the same day. Who know what will happen? For sheer unpredictability, you need to keep an eye on them.
3. Kutless. With a new CD supposedly on the way, the massively popular band will definitely be one to watch for.
2. Underoath. The hardcore phenomenon. The mere fact that they are doing a new CD has music fans around the world in desperate anticipation.
1. Family Force 5. In two years, they went from unknowns to one of the hottest bands in Christian music. With a new, untitled CD on the way, the dance party that is FF5 will likely continue to spread.
Honorably Mentions:
A Rotterdam November. Despite being unsigned and unknown, they landed a hit with “City Without a Heart” and look to be a promising band.
Fireflight. Looks Unbreakable.
Leeland. Blindside. Switchfoot. Anberlin. John Reuben. Krystal Meyers. Deserved to fit in the top 11, only I ran out of room.
Poll Results
Well, the results are in from my poll, and of the four people who voted, 3/4 voted for Hawk Nelson. One person (me) voted for David Crowder*Band. I’ll have to do another poll when I have a few more readers.

Update: During a recent upgrade, Purevolume.com removed all of the free samplers from the website. Including this one. So I’m sorry to say it’s no longer available. However, if you looked through the archives here on The Free Christian Music Blog, you could probably find some music that is just as good. I know it’s not the same, but it’s the best I have to offer, so please accept my humble condolences.
