I’ve got some very exciting free music news to share today… “Mess of Me” anyone?  That’s right, Switchfoot’s latest hit “Mess of Me” is available for free, plus several other great songs.  The list:

  • Leeland – “Count Me In”
  • Underoath – “Writing On The Walls”
  • Rapture Ruckus – “One”
  • Hillsong United – “No Reason to Hide”
  • Parachute Band – “Shout It Out”
  • Family Force 5 – “Dance or Die (The Secret Handshake Remix)”
  • Falling Up – “Streams of Woe at Acheron”
  • And of course, Switchfoot’s “Mess of Me”

All eight songs can be yours, for free, thanks to Parachute Festival (the New Zealand equivalent of Creation or Cornerstone Festival.)  You do need to sign up for the Parachute Festival’s website to download the songs, and you can only download each song once, but the music is great, and it’s free.  Definitely worth checking out.  Enjoy!

Wally’s Yule-Rock Sampler

You know how the Free Christian Music Awards are going on right now here on TFCMB?  Well, I think I just found my vote for sampler of the year.  This particular sampler is being released by the radio show Total Axxess & Provident Music.  I have to say, this is the most impressive track-list I’ve seen in a long time:

  • Fireflight – “Desperate”
  • Leeland w/ Brandon Heath – “Follow You”
  • Tal & Acacia – “Garbage In”
  • Pillar – “Secrets and Regrets”
  • Phil Stacey – “You’re Not Shaken”
  • Matt Maher – “Hold Us Together”
  • RED – “Start Again”
  • Brandon Heath – “Love Never Fails”
  • Tenth Avenue North – “Times”
  • Jars of Clay – “Boys (Lesson One)”

You’ve got brand new Fireflight, great songs from Pillar, Phil Stacey, Brandon Heath, and Jars of Clay, really, just about everything on this sampler is worth getting.  Don’t miss this one!

3 Free Songs from Leeland, Brandon Heath, and Tenth Avenue North

Yep, this is hot:  To help promote the Follow You Tour featuring Leeland, Brandon Heath, and Francesca Battistelli, Provident Records is giving away three free songs, Brandon Heath’s hit “Wait and See”, Tenth Avenue North’s “Hold My Heart”, and Leeland’s “Follow You”, which also features Brandon Heath – all three of which are amazing songs.

Now, you’re probably looking at this and wonder why on earth there’s a free song from Tenth Avenue North and not Francesca Battistelli.  Honestly, I have no idea, but “Hold My Heart” is a excellent song, so I’m not complaining.  :)   Just don’t miss these downloads, it’s only going to be available for a limited time, so make sure to grab the songs ASAP.  Enjoy!

Free Download, “Love Is On the Move”

Love Is On The Move

Alright, I’ve got a free download by Leeland from their upcoming album, Love Is On the Move. All you need to do is fill out a simple survey, and it will link you to a free download of the title track. The song is about God’s great love for us, and how it comes to heal the broken and lonely and to set the sinners free. Lead singer Leeland Mooring’s explains why this song is the title track:

The biggest thing that I could ever understand, or get from God, is how much God loves me…Love is the most powerful thing we can release into the world. It doesn’t matter how much anger, hate, violence or sin is surrounding us, the most powerful thing we can give someone is love. That’s why we titled the record ‘Love Is On The Move.’

It’s a great song, and I hope you’ll like it. Be sure you check it out. :)

If you liked that song, be sure to visit’s Leeland’s website to check out the listening party of their entire album. You can also see short stories behind each song, and what they mean to the band. To enter the listening party, you’ll need to give your email and zip-code to listen, but I think that’s a small price you have to pay.

Relevant Update

Tenth Avenue NorthDid anyone else notice when Relevant Magazine took their free song page down a while back?  I was pretty disappointed when I noticed that their epic list of free, legal, live, acoustic, song downloads was missing.  Thankfully…

Relevant Magazine recently updated their website, and have put the same great list of downloads up, just on another URL.  Same songs, different web page.  If you haven’t download these yet, and live, acoustic performances by artists like Jars of Clay, Tenth Avenue North, Sara Groves, Pigeon John, and No More Kings sounds good to you, you don’t want to miss this.  You can either link up here, or check out my old post for more information in my post about it.

Matt’s Top 10 Favorite Posts of 2008

Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe that it’s 2009 already.  Strangely enough, it doesn’t feel much different from 2008 so far.  Hmm.  Anyway, James came up with a great idea for the end of the year.  We’re both going to go through last years posts and pick our top ten.  There was a ton of great music last year, and I had trouble narrowing it down to just 10, but I finally succeeded.  Without further ado, my list:

10.  Tie: Jonathon Steingard’s Atlantis EP & Fighting the Fall- I just couldn’t decide on this.  The Atlantis EP is an excellent & personal solo debut from Hawk Nelson’s guitarist Jonathon Steingard that I really like.  On the other hand, Fighting the Fall is a talented independant emo/screamo band with two good free songs.  Both Atlantis & the FtF downloads are still available.

9.  Run Kid Run “One In A Million” and Sanctus Real “Turn On The Lights” – “Turn On The Lights” is a great song, but the real reason I particularly love this post was “One In A Million”.  It’s an awesome, catchy song that I can’t get enough of.  Sadly, both songs are no longer available.

8.  Leeland “Opposite Way” – Not only do I like the song, but I also really like what Leeland did by asking fans to share their stories about “going the opposite way”.  This one is still available, if you’d like to check it out.

7.  The Devil Wears Prada, Burden of a Day, Before Their Eyes – It’s hard to top The Devil Wears Prada, and when you add in two promising new bands like Burden of a Day (with an excusive demo, I might add) and Before Their Eyes, it’s probably going to be good.  Still available.

6.  The Tooth & Nail Fuel Sampler – I shouldn’t really need to explain this one much.  Something like 25 free songs from the best Tooth & Nail Records bands.  My favorites are Run Kid Run, Capital Lights, and The Becoming.  By the looks of it, this sampler is still available too.

5.  House of Heroes’ FreeHoH .com – Three awesome songs from The End Is Not The End, House of Heroes’ latest that could very well be the best CD of the year.  Really, really good.  As far as I can tell the songs are still available.

4.  Staple “Dictatorship vs. Democracy” – I don’t know what it is about this song, but I just don’t get tired of it.  This one has been on my mp3 player all year, and I still love it.  This one is also still available.

3.  Number One Gun – Pure alternative rock goodness.  I don’t think I can begin to count how many times I’ve listened to these three songs this year.  Still available, and highly recommended.

2.  Three Cord Wonder – Even though they may not have been the next big thing musically, I think Three Cord Wonder was one of the coolest Christian bands I featured this year.  I listen to a lot of music, and I rarely ever get to hear such a unashamedly Christian band.  Sure, the lyrics are simple, but they’re true, and give glory to God.  That’s a band I can look up to.

1.  Esterlyn – I’d never heard of the group Esterlyn before 2008, and now, they’re one of my top artists.  In fact, I liked their music enough to write up a whole spotlight on them.  Extremely good.

There you have it, the year 2008 in free Christian music as seen by Matt.  Now, even though those were my favorite free music posts, there were a couple of others that deserve mention simply because they were particularly fun, random, and unusual.  That list includeds No More Gloom, the free CD Everyday Joe’s Coffee House (in Fort Collins, Colorado) released, featuring different songs by artists who’ve played there, which was really random.  And then there’s the BarlowGirl song on the German site that required step-by-step instructions.  That was a lot of fun to write up.  And, last but not least, the mind-blowing weird song titles post.  That was so much fun to research and write for, and totally random too.

That’s why I decided to start stockpiling song titles for version 2, which you can look for sometime soon.  Like last time, I’d love it if everyone could contribute their favorite weird-and-wacky titles.  Leave a comment, or shot me an email at freechristianmusicblog@gmail.com.  Thank everyone for reading, and happy New Year!

Oh, and I just remembered, I was going to ask what your favorite posts from 2008 were.  Do you agree with me, or have your own top pick?

Christmas Series: Day 12 – A Bit Of Everything

It’s Christmas Eve, and thanks to many reader suggestions, I have more then enough songs to finish up this year’s Christmas series. In fact, I’ve got so many left, this post is going to be predominately composed of links. This post is going to be a bit of a endurance event, so make sure you’ve got a while to dedicate to downloading. I kid you not, there is a TON of music to come. Brace yourself. Oh, yeah, and merry Christmas! :)

Let’s kick it off with Shane & Shane. They’ve got their song “Away in A Manger” available from Today’s Christian Woman. Actually, Mandisa, Sara Groves, and Casting Crowns all have songs on that site too.

Alli Rogers has a brand new Christmas EP up on NoiseTrade. It’s called The Silent Stars EP, and you can pay want you want for it, or get it for free by sharing it with 5 friends. Also on NoiseTrade is the Christmas edition of The Silent’s CD Unseen, featuring their version of “We Three Kings”. To top those two, you can also get a free compilation featuring songs from the Love Came Down A Christmas Time Tour. The sampler has songs from all 4 artists on the tour, Jars of Clay, Sixpence None the Richer, Sara Groves, and Leeland. Very cool. Check it here.

If that’s still not enough music for you, GodTube has got free Christmas songs from Travis Ryan, Rachel Scott, and Sara Groves, plus some other goodies. Then there’s two free songs from High Valley on the Centricity Record’s website. Leigh Nash has a free Christmas song on Download.com, Theocracy has a wild Christmas song called “Rudolph vs. Frosty” up on their website, and then there’s The Staple Singers, who have “No Room at the Inn” up on Download.com.

Sixpence None the Richer, Sara Groves, and DecembeRadio all have Christmas songs available for free on JesusFreakHideout.com, iTicket’s has a Christmas download from Gabriela Hindy, plus two other songs from Abandon and Mission Six. Asthmatic Kitty Records has two free Sufjan Stevens Christmas songs available too.
Amazon.com has got numerous free songs from the likes of Sixpence None the Richer, Leigh Nash, Jars of Clay, Mannheim Steamroller, Big Daddy Weave, Jim Brickman, David Phelps, and BarlowGirl.

BarlowGirl, Jars of Clay, Chris Sligh, and Casting Crowns all have free mp3s available on CCM Magazine’s website.

I think Don Francisco wins the award for the most songs available. 21 on his website!

Even though it’s not a download, The Advantage has added a cool Christmas song to their MySpace profile. It’s called “Retail Christmas”, and it’s actually quite good. Here’s hoping they do a free download of it soon.

Brian Bate’s has an interesting free download. It works on a honor system – something you sadly don’t see much of any more. Anyway, the song is “Mary Christmas” and it’s available on his website.

Willet’s website, after being down for weeks, is finally up and running again with a free original Christmas song by the band. It’s called “The Nativity”, and looks pretty good.

Speaking of independent rock, the group The Violet Burning has got a full Christmas CD for free this year. It’s called Divine, and you can check that out on their website.

And, to close, Sleeping At Last has three Christmas downloads up on their Virb profile, plus one live song and another normal track.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Leeland is Going The Opposite Way

LeelandLeeland is going the opposite way.  Well, kind of.  The band is giving away their song “Opposite Way”, the title track to their new CD, for free on their website.

What Leeland is doing is actually really cool, they are asking people to share stories of how Christ has helped them to go in the opposite direction, leaving the easy way to do hard things for Christ.  It’s so encouraging to read the stories of how God’s worked in peoples lives.  It’s just awesome.  Amen and all praise to Christ!

MASSIVE Amount of Free Live, Acoustic Mp3s

Free music today courtesy of Relevant Magazine, and specifically, their podcast.  They have approximately 60 (give or take) free songs, all of which were recorded live in their studios.  The majority are acoustic, but there are a few “normal” songs, specifically by Pigeon John and The Procussions. I wasn’t sure what a live, semi-acoustic rap would sound like, but it’s really pretty good.  As expected, artists like Sara Groves, Phil Wickham, Derek Webb, and Andrew Peterson sound as good unplugged as plugged in.

There are also quite a few new, indie artists on the site as well.  A couple to watch out for are Band Marino and No More Kings.  And if indie isn’t exactly your favorite thing in the world, there’s plenty of staples like Jars of Clay, Leeland, Dizmas, NEEDTOBREATHE, and David Crowder*Band.  Just about something for everyone.  Enjoy!  :)

-Relevant Podcast-

Edit:  Relevant has moved their list of free songs to a new page on their site, get the details on that here.

Free Sampler from Creation Fest!

Not two days since I posted about the last free music from Creation Festival, the catchy song “Captives Come Home” by Run Kid Run, Creation has officially topped themselves 10 times over. As in a 10 song free sampler featuring Run Kid Run, Thousand Foot Krutch, Pillar, Fireflight, Dizmas, The Afters, Leeland, Mike Farris, and more. There are at least 3, if not 4 or 5, number one hits inside this sampler. Totally, absolutely sweet.

These aren’t no-name songs either. “Unbreakable”, by Fireflight, “Falls Apart” by Thousand Foot Krutch, “For The Love of The Game”, Pillar. Seriously cool stuff.

I could probably wax eloquent about how incredible it is all night, but I really need to get to bed. So just get it and enjoy it.

-Pre-Festival Sampler on Creation Festivals Website-
Update: The sampler has sadly been removed, and the iTunes code has expired.  Bummer.
