P.O.D.

Speedlinking Thursday: An Introduction

Today’s I’m going to be trying something a bit differently.  Instead of writing up individual free-music-sources, I’m going to speedlink them – that is, link either to the download itself or to another blogger who already wrote up the download.

Plus, I’m going to throw in something cool from the archives and maybe a music video or two.  Let me know what you think in the comments. Ready, set, speedlink!

1.  FreeCCM.com has new free music from Decyfer Down, P.O.D., Caedmon’s Call, and Todd Agnew.

2.  Indie Vision Music recently found a sweet sampler featuring War Of Ages, Means, For Today, Kingston Falls, Wrench In The Works, and more.  That’s some sick hardcore.

3.  “Perservence of the Saints” is a classic music video by the O.C. Supertones.  Old school, and awesome.

4.  Disciple’s “Back Again” is this week’s blast from the past – great headbanger.

Free P.O.D Download

Though it seems almost impossible to have missed getting this song, after having it featured on the homepage of RadioU, on FreeCCM.com, on Amazon.com, on RockHouseCafe.com, and more websites on top of that, I suppose someone new to The Free Christian Music Blog could have missed it, so this is for you, recent converts, who may have missed the download previously.

I’m getting way a head of myself though, the song is “Shine With Me”, the band, P.O.D..  You can get the song for free by viewing their new ecard, which is available on their website:

Update From FreeCCM.com

Hey everyone, this isn’t Matt. My name is James, and I will be helping Matt out by bringing you free music whenever he is unable to.

Now that that introduction is over, lets get to the free music. FreeCCM.com has four free downloads for your listening pleasure. The featured download there is “Shine With Me” by POD, which you might have picked up a few weeks ago (from this post), but if you didn’t get it then, you should head over to FreeCCM and pick it up. Rounding out the free songs are “Falling Inside The Black” by Skillet, “I Will See Jesus” by Mark Harris, and “Be Thou My Vision” by Sandi Patty. Both the POD and Skillet tracks are solid songs by those bands, and though I’m not a big fan of Christian Contemporary, both Mark Harris and Sandi Patty have good songs that those of you who are CCM fans should enjoy.

11 Bands to Watch for in 2008

~ 11 Bands to look for in 2008 ~

11. Stellar Kart. If we really can Expect the Impossible, it must be pretty cool.

10. Inhabited. Their new album Love has been getting good reviews already, and looks to be an great CD.

9. Inhale Exhale. After a great debut, their sophomore disk looks to be great as well.

8. Pillar. With the apparent return to their older style, For the Love of the Game looks to be a worth squeal continuation to the Pillar legacy.

7. Hawk Nelson. If past awesome-ness is a sign of future awesome-ness, they are in great shape.

6. The Afters. After, what, three years, the band return with their second album, which looks to be as good or better then then I Wish We All Could Win.

5. P.O.D. (Payable on Death). Overlooking there new CD, When Angels and Serpents Dance, would be a serious mistake.

4. Showbread. Is a so crazy. They are releasing two different CDs on the same day. Who know what will happen? For sheer unpredictability, you need to keep an eye on them.

3. Kutless. With a new CD supposedly on the way, the massively popular band will definitely be one to watch for.

2. Underoath. The hardcore phenomenon. The mere fact that they are doing a new CD has music fans around the world in desperate anticipation.

1. Family Force 5. In two years, they went from unknowns to one of the hottest bands in Christian music. With a new, untitled CD on the way, the dance party that is FF5 will likely continue to spread.

Honorably Mentions:

A Rotterdam November. Despite being unsigned and unknown, they landed a hit with “City Without a Heart” and look to be a promising band.

Fireflight. Looks Unbreakable.

Leeland. Blindside. Switchfoot. Anberlin. John Reuben. Krystal Meyers. Deserved to fit in the top 11, only I ran out of room. :(

SpiralFrog Review – Is it worth it?

I’ve been reviewing the ad-supported free music service SpiralFrog this week. It’s a mixed bag, with some highlights, low-lights, and interesting song selection. The following is my review.

Signing up is reasonably easy, although I had to download a third party plug-in to access the site. Before I could do anything with the site, I also had to download the “SpiralFrog Download Manager”, which I’ll get to a bit later. After that, I got in.

To start with, the first thing you notice is the advertising. Several ads banners and ad boxes. It reminds me of another teen-oriented website, Myspace. I was able to hide most of the advertisements using AdBlock Plus. The ads aren’t too terribly annoying.

The selection is…interesting. For Christian music, they have a couple of pretty cool MxPx CDs, the Elms’ Chess Hotel, the Flyleaf EP and the new Flyleaf Special Edition album, and several interesting String Tributes CD. There’s a String Tribute to Flyleaf, Casting Crowns, and Underoath. So if you’ve ever wondered what “Does Anybody Her Here”, “It’s A Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door”, and “I’m So Sick” sounds like rendered in guitars, violins and cellos, now is your chance to find out. There’s even a documentary-CD from POD, which was tells the band’s history. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the band had anything to do with it. That’s all I could find in a week. There may be more.

Another feature of the website is the music videos. I was able to find several MxPx videos (Including my personal favorite “Responsibility”.), as well as Flyleaf’s latest, “All Around Me”.

The system itself is rather buggy. The website is slow, taking a long time to load pages. It’s been getting faster, but I can’t help but wonder if the site is slowing browsing down to make sure people view the advertisements. Could be it’s just a popular site too though. I don’t know. The SpiralFrog Download Manger runs all the time, even when the service is not in use. I’ve noticed it taking from around four megabytes to 11 megabytes of RAM. It’s not a huge resource hog, but enough to annoy you.

There are some pretty serious limitations to what you can do with the music and videos. Songs will only play on certain Mp3 Players (iPods and my Sansa se130 aren’t supported), and only on two different devices, and only then if you sync it with you computer every thirty days. You aren’t allowed to burn CD with any songs you download. You also have to visit the website and renew your membership every thirty days to continue playing download songs and videos on your computer.

In conclusion, you probably shouldn’t plan on becoming a long term member unless you are a fanatic MxPx or Flyleaf fan. For everyone else, I would recommend surfing the site awhile. Maybe become a member to try the site out. Download some songs, watch some videos. After all, if you don’t like it, you can always let you subscription expire.

Update: And even if you let your subscription expire, you will still get email from SpiralFrog, asking you to come back.  Ask me how I know this.
