Announcing The 2009 Free Christian Music Awards Winners

It’s time!  The votes are all in, and it’s time to announce the winners in the first annual Free Christian Music Awards!  You helped picked the nominees, and you voted on the winners – so read on to find out how your favorites did!

Free Song of the Year:

Switchfoot Hello Hurricane

  1. Switchfoot – “Mess of Me”
  2. Owl City – “Fireflies”
  3. Tie: Thousand Foot Krutch – “Bring Me to Life” / Relient K – “Forget and Not Slow Down”

With 41% of the vote, Switchfoot is clear winner in free song of the year, which really isn’t a surprise – Switchfoot’s dedicated fans gave “Mess of Me” a lead from the start, and the fact that it was a radio smash for the band didn’t hurt any.  Taking second place with 34% of the vote, Owl City’s wonderfully-popular “Fireflies”, followed by a surprise tie for third between Thousand Foot Krutch & Relient K.

Free Album of the Year:

We Shot The Moon Fear and Love

  1. We Shot The Moon – “Fear and Love”
  2. Esterlyn – “Lamps”
  3. MercyMe – “10 Live”

The award for “Free Album of the Year” was the closest of all the races this year, with We Shot The Moon’s Fear and Love beating Esterlyn’s Lamps for the title by only 1%, and MercyMe’s digital-only live album 10 Live only 3% behind Esterlyn for a respectable third place finish.

Free Christmas Song of the Year:

Relient K Let It Snow Baby...Let It Reindeer

  1. Relient K – “I Celebrate the Day”
  2. Thousand Foot Krutch – “Jingle Bell Rock”
  3. TobyMac – “This Christmas”

Relient K may have tied for third for “Free Song of the Year”, but they dominated “Free Christmas Song of the Year” from the start, with “I Celebrate the Day” finishing with 1/3 of the vote.  Not far behind, with 22%, Thousand Foot Krutch’s rocking rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock” takes second place, and TobyMac’s “This Christmas” takes third.

Free EP of the Year:

House of Heroes The End Is Not The End EP

  1. House of Heroes – “The End Is Not The End EP”
  2. B.Reith – “The B.Reith EP”
  3. Esterlyn – “Mending The Meaning EP”

2009 was a good year to be House of Heroes – not only was their The End Is Not The End EP the undisputed winner of “Free EP of the Year” with a whopping 49% of the vote, but the same EP was also the most-nominated of any of the songs or albums in the running.  B.Reith picks up a strong second place finish with 25% of the vote, followed by Esterlyn at third with 20%.

Free Sampler/Compilation of the Year:

Fuel Sampler 2009

  1. Tooth & Nail Records – “Fuel Sampler 2009″
  2. Huntington University – “Picks”
  3. Creation Festival – “Creation Festival 2009 iTunes Sampler”

Taking first place in the coveted “Free Sampler/Compilation of the Year” category by a wide margin is the 2009 version of Tooth & Nail Record’s Fuel sampler, with the underdog and my personal favorite, Huntington University’s free compilation Picks taking second place, followed by Creation Festival’s 2009 iTunes sampler in third.

Most Giving Artist of 2009:

House of Heroes

  1. House of Heroes
  2. Esterlyn
  3. MercyMe

“Most Giving Artist of 2009″ is a special category – rather then being nominated by fans, those in the running earned a spot by being exceptionally generous with free music this year.  In an impressive (and much deserved) second #1 victory, the title goes to House of Heroes, with Esterlyn in second, and MercyMe taking rounding out the category in third.

Well, that’s it for this year – what are your thought on the results?  I don’t know about you, but I’m sure looking forward to seeing what’s in store for 2010.  Also, if you’d like to see the full results of the voting, feel free to check out this page for a full list of nominees & how they did.

Summer Festival Sampler 2009

Toothandnail - BEC recordings - Solid StateYes, you heard me right, yet another summer sampler from Tooth & Nail/BECrecordings/Solid State. This one might not be as big and make your head explode, but it still contains some good music. Also, many of these songs were already on the previous Sampler Matt posted just two days ago, but, this one does have a few songs that were not. Of the twelve songs, 7 of them are on the Fuel Sampler. Track listing:

  • Emery – Cutthroat Collapse
  • Thousand Foot Krutch – Bring Me To Life
  • Kutless – The Rescue
  • FM Static – Boy Moves to a New Town with Optimistic Outlook
  • The Glorious Unseen – Hear Our Prayers
  • Falling Up – Streams of Woe at Acheron
  • KJ-52 – Wake Up
  • Hawk Nelson – Lets Dance Dojo Dominating Remix by Jason Dunn
  • Since October – Guilty
  • August Burns Red – Thirty and Seven
  • Seventh Day Slumber – Take Everything
  • Children 18:3 – All My Balloons

Anyway, even if you did get the Fuel Sampler, the remaining five songs on the Summer Festival Sampler ‘09 make it all the worth while to download. Besides, what do you have to lose?

-Summer Festival Sampler 2009-

It also says that the ‘The Rescue’ is done by an artist called by the same name. However, when I downloaded it, it came out as Kutless. I haven’t heard of an artist by the name by ‘The Rescue’, so I believe it was just an error.

Fuel Returns (And Matt’s Head Explodes)

Tooth & Nail Fuel SamplerIt’s true – Tooth & Nail and Solid State Records have let loose yet another unbelievably epic sampler to wreck musically chaos on the eardrums of fans everywhere.  In fact, the only thing that could come close to touching this is the last Fuel sampler.  The tracklist:

  • Surrogate – “Exercise Machines”
  • Living Sacrifice – “Overkill Exposure (Rough Mix)”
  • Haste the Day – “68″
  • As Cities Burn – “84′ Sheepdog”
  • Children 18:3 – “All My Balloons”
  • FM Static – “Boy Moves To A New Town With Optimistic Outlook”
  • Thousand Foot Krutch – “Bring Me To Life”
  • Emery – “Cutthroat Collapse”
  • Ivoryline – “Days End”
  • mewithoutYou – “Every Thought A Thought of You”
  • The Crucified – “The Pit”
  • MxPx – “Punk Rock Girl”
  • The Ascendicate – “Scottish”
  • Oh, Sleeper – “Son of the Morning”
  • August Burns Red – “Thirty and Seven”
  • Becoming The Archetype – “Dichotomy”
  • Copeland – “The Grey Man”
  • Hawk Nelson – “Let’s Dance (Dojo Dominating Remix)”
  • Showbread – “Nothing Matters Anymore”
  • MyChildren MyBride – “On The Wings of Integrity”
  • Neon Horse – “Strange Town”
  • Corey Crowder – “Look How Far We’ve Come”
  • Trenches – “Sacrament”
  • The Showdown – “[Achilles] The Backbreaker”
  • And Then There Were None – “Reinventing Robert Cohn”
  • Family Force 5 – “Fever”
  • Jonezetta – “Sick In The Teeth”
  • Since October – “Guilty”
  • The Chariot – “Daggers”
  • Underoath – “Desperate Times, Desperate Measures”
  • Secret & Whisper – “Anchors (Acoustic)”

If that doesn’t get you pumped up for this, I don’t know what will.  Well, besides the fact that the Showbread and Oh, Sleeper songs are brand new, never-before-heard.  They aren’t even on MySpace yet.  Extremely epic, and a must-have.

Of course, that’s not to say that it’s perfect.  The cover art is a little creepy, and the website mentions a song from The Almost, which wasn’t in my .zip file.  I won’t be surprised if there’s an update with the song in it soon enough.  Even so, those are minor details.  Get this, right, now.  Seriously.  Do it.  Now:

-Tooth & Nail/Solid States’s Fuel Sampler-

Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I’m totally digging the Children 18:3, FM Static, and Ivoryline right now, great stuff, and I’m not nearly through the sampler yet.  What are your favorite songs?

Brand New Thousand Foot Krutch!

Thousand Foot Krutch

Very, very exciting free music today from a little band called Thousand Foot Krutch.  They’ve got a brand new song (never before heard in it’s entirety!)  from their new CD Welcome to the Masquerade.  It’s called “Bring Me to Life”, and it flat out rocks.  Seriously, it does.

It sounds like it would fit right in on Phenomenon (which is generally considered one of Christian rocks greatest CDs ever).  Trevor even does a little rapping, which he hasn’t done with TFK in a long time.  It’s just a good, solid, rock out song.  Needless to say, I am now very excited to see what Welcome to the Masquerade sounds like.

You actually have two choices for downloading the song, though both entail basically the same thing.  You can go to FeedTheBeat.com, a website run my TacoBell, and download the song for free, along with another great free Christian rock song, “Unbreakable” by Fireflight.

Or, as an alternative, you could also head over to WelcomeToTheMasquerade.com, a official Thousand Foot Krutch mini-site, and download just “Bring Me to Life”.  Either way, you’ll need to provide an email address, zip code, and your country of residence.

Regardless of the site you choose, I really hope you’ll check the song out, and hopefully rocking out to it as much as I do.  :)

Superchick + Thousand Foot Krutch Wedding, New Contest

Instead of featuring free music today, I decided to take a break and write about all the cool contest Superchick has going on, and wedding bells.

Big news! According to GMC, TFK and Superchick are going to be hearing wedding bells sometime soon. Thousand Foot Krutch guitarist Nick Baumhardt proposed to Tricia Brock, lead vocalist for Superchick. Hopefully more details will be released soon.

Speaking of Superchick, the band has announced three sweet contests. The first is sponsored by Family Christian Stores, grand prize being dinner with the band. Definitely worth checking out on the Family Christian Store website.

The second contest is on MySpace. You jazz up your profile with lots of cool Superchick stuff, and possibly win 1 of a 100 signed exclusive posters. You can check that out on the contest site, here.

Last but definitely not least, the band also wants you to show your directing prowess by making an original music video for the song “Alive”. You can get the full detail from Superchick’s MySpace blog. Sounds like a lot of fun. So much fun, in fact, that I plan on entering.

Free Sampler from Creation Fest!

Not two days since I posted about the last free music from Creation Festival, the catchy song “Captives Come Home” by Run Kid Run, Creation has officially topped themselves 10 times over. As in a 10 song free sampler featuring Run Kid Run, Thousand Foot Krutch, Pillar, Fireflight, Dizmas, The Afters, Leeland, Mike Farris, and more. There are at least 3, if not 4 or 5, number one hits inside this sampler. Totally, absolutely sweet.

These aren’t no-name songs either. “Unbreakable”, by Fireflight, “Falls Apart” by Thousand Foot Krutch, “For The Love of The Game”, Pillar. Seriously cool stuff.

I could probably wax eloquent about how incredible it is all night, but I really need to get to bed. So just get it and enjoy it.

-Pre-Festival Sampler on Creation Festivals Website-
Update: The sampler has sadly been removed, and the iTunes code has expired.  Bummer.

I can guarantee that if you enjoy loud music, you will find something you can listen to on here.

Note: You do need to give your email address to get the sampler. It’s worth it.

Update: During a recent upgrade, Purevolume.com removed all of the free samplers from the website. Including this one. So I’m sorry to say it’s no longer available. However, if you looked through the archives here on The Free Christian Music Blog, you could probably find some music that is just as good. I know it’s not the same, but it’s the best I have to offer, so please accept my humble condolences.
